The day started off fine. I was doing another perimeter check around the Outpost and checking in with friends as I walked. Nothing was out of the ordinary and yet I couldn’t shake this charged energy that I felt was putting me on edge.
Kelora even felt it as I strolled past her crafting runes beneath the sun’s rays. “Cousin! I feel your energy from paces away. Your aura is oddly colored this day. Perhaps you need a soak in the river to calm what’s going on inside of you?”
I liked that idea. After thanking her, I continued on my circuit and once I reached the near woods where the river runs through, I removed my shoes and stepped into the shallows.
I went to lower my scythe onto the bank but it would not release my hold on it. The weapon was sending me images. Dangerous ones.
I saw blood flowing around me instead of the clear waters.
I saw the blank faces of nameless beings devoid of life.
I saw a body rising from the river of blood, called back to this plane, who or what could this be…
I felt the impact before I realized I was no longer alone. An short bolt sprouted from my arm and two cloth-wrapped individuals were on the bank pointing blades at me. One with an empty hand crossbow.
I left myself at that moment. Floated above as the scythe took over. It pulled me right to them, the water splitting where my feet dragged, and immediately cut down the closest. The second with the crossbow barely registered before my body plunged the wicked blade into their chest. Impacted, the blood of the bandit… assassin… I know not, was being absorbed by the scythe. A tendril of black blood then emerged from its handle and grasped the bolt within my shoulder and yanked it out.I regained consciousness as the sun was setting. I was lying next to the river. Alone. No bodies. No wrappings. No blood. The scythe on the ground beside me. Did I dream it all? I pulled back my robe to check my shoulder and there was no wound. I don’t know, maybe my worried mind for the safety of my friends and my imagination just overwhelmed me a bit. I walk to the Inn that many of us are sharing as housing is being built. I pass by the friends who are dining, drinking, gaming, or conversing and head to my room in a daze. Sleep, I say to myself, I just need sleep. As I remove my outer robes and cloak, still bewildered, my finger slips into the new hole made right where I felt the bolt enter my arm.
