City of Haven, House Jernigan
Santion 15th“You want to do what, my lord?” I couldn’t help but feel a huge lump in my throat as Earl Reynard and Count Norman Royce, both informed me of the strategy to use Meadowmere as bait to draw the De Jardin alliance in. Then they, along with Jernigan forces would collapse behind them. This would cut off the De Jardin, Rousseau, and Renaux forces from resupply and being able to retreat. We would surround the enemy and then hopefully they would surrender and sue for peace.
“But my lord, surely there is a much better target that the De Jardin would go after. Our town is small and fairly new. We present no strategic value in and of itself.” Reynard spoke up. “You and the very able-bodied citizens of Meadowmere are some of the strongest, cleverest, and bravest souls I’ve met in my time on this plane of existence. You have the ability to withstand a strong assault long enough to draw the enemy close.” He said this with complete conviction and sincerity.
“No other town would be able to hold on long enough. We’ll fortify all other areas, drawing them in to your direction.” He paused and looked reassuringly to me. He then said, “And I will make sure that the land my wife and I grew up on will be rebuilt and restored to its proper glory once this is all done.”
That was 3 months ago. It seems like a lifetime ago though, just like the previous war that I fought in. Friends lost or captured. Victories won; battles lost…. It all seems the same as before. The only difference now is I have lost a home and community that I’m deeply connected to. It has been very difficult trying to be strong for the citizens and my fellow soldiers here. All the while knowing that just around the corner, the invasion would visit our front door and force us out of our town.
Like before I will have to rise above myself. Like before, I may have to tap into the darkness that was grown and nurtured within me. Like before, I may bleed alongside good people. Like before, I may have to be ready to die.
Unlike before though, I now have something truly special to fight for. My home and my friends…. No, my family!
All of the planning, sacrifice, bloodshed, tears, and pain; all of it comes down to this upcoming battle. May Ione bless my blade, my mind, and my instincts.
