Tilly’s entries in the Hourglass’s ledger were neat and concise, a far cry from the looping, extensive scrawl that Jack’s additions favored. The two new members of the team had made things so much easier, and Jack had no qualms about letting them handle things while he worked. He looked up from the slim book, watching Dahlya pace as the group prepared for the next step of the voyage. Even though the Beast Folk were the core of the current situation, his friend had made their cause as fiercely her own as she did in all things. Her intense energy was infectious, and he closed his eyes with a smile.

“Focus, old man,” he told himself. “You can’t prepare for what you don’t look for.”

Instead, another group, using her name, had broken off, for some reason intent on another goal than using the prophecy to stave off the Void. Other business had gone on, but Jack hadn’t been a direct part of it, so he knew he was operating on too little information to speculate. The plan had changed little. Help the Sages. Gather the things needed to stop the Void.

Looking to the healing potions and surgeon’s kits the Hourglass team had made, Jack took some small satisfaction in his part. Those who would go and do the real work would at least have some help from him.

“Everyone does their part, however small…”
