From the Journal of Jack Outremer
Kalen is captured. When Bruzog returned alone, I was fearful that both Kalen and Simon had been killed, but it was somehow worse. Kelen Inkwell in the hands of House Dejardin seems a fate worse than death if we can not secure his release. “We” There’s a laugh. I’m barely even a shopkeeper at this point. Which may be all to the better. Tannas is a warrior of no small skill, as are Simon, Marcus, Aiken, and Bruzog. I just listen and swing a stick from time to time.
However, in the course of my listening, I’ve learned much. The Dejardin require some documentaiton to travel in their lands, which seems to be creating a market of ts own for those enterprising enough to forge decent copies. Someone wanted a certain Menace brought to justice, but alas, he was kille din the attempt to arrest him. However, his spirit did mention impersonationg a guard of a certain house, and he bore a badge that looked similar to House Royce, though I could have been mistaken. It also came to my attention that someone sought a specific flowering plant, though for what purpose, I can not say.
Several new folk have wandered into town, eager to draw blade and prove themselves. Mayhap their enthusiasm could be turned to good use, and even help our outpost-turning-town grow and prosper. Gods know we need some security here. Between bandits and the hideous bunny, the other day was taxing beyond measure. However, I finally got Z to complete the shop that she had been paid for a while back. Her work is sturdy, but…short. I’ll need to make a sign warning folk to mind their heads in light of the front door’s Dwarven-sized craftsmanship.
Lessons learned these past few days. If it’s shiny and laying on the ground, leave it be. If someone offers a reward for live capture, it’s a good bet someone else might want them dead even more. And a clandestine mission into hostile lands usually isn’t all that clandestine.
My catalog is on its way, and I have to install the new workstation. And I will be witness to hopefully great deeds, or at least some shenanigans at the De Jardin’s detriment. I’ve yet to meet any of their folk, but I already have an unpleasant feeling about any who would willingly pledge to that banner.
