Raine Lost:
(Waking up)
Ow… my head. Why’s it so dark? Wait… where am I? And the ground is so uncomfortable… (feels around and hits solid walls to each side and above) I’m trapped. I’m… trapped… (panic) breathe… just breathe. I remember leaving another language lesson with Oisin and heading home to Molly Mavis’s… ugh stop panicking… the sky was so beautiful at dusk. I was singing Mermaid’s Lament… Walking into a canopy covering part of the road to Haven. Then… I don’t remember! (Starts kicking and pounding the enclosing walls) Aaaaahhhh!!!! STOP! What do I have? About a foot of space above me, half a foot on each side, in-between those above, and scoot down… there’s the end at my feet. Let my senses take over… reach out. I smell spruce… this is a wooden container I’m in. I hear… straining to hear… calm down… a drip! There’s a drip hitting the box. Hope. It’s steady and one spot… not rain then. Now my magic, barrier won’t help, no one to knockout, healing… no, magic blast… oh that could be a bad idea… but, hey, it’s something. (Shift my body to the left side and point my right fist at the bottom) Magic blast!
Raine Lost 2:
(Regaining consciousness. Trying to move and hitting wooden walls again.) Uhhhh… my head… still trapped. Magic blast… was not the best idea. Wait. Somethings different… light through cracks. I feel air circulation. I did some damage to my prison. I can breathe.
I hear something. Movement, heavy steps. Someone is close. Think… time to do something I was raised to do: sing. Sing a song of luring. A song of tantalizing enticement. A song of madness that can only be quenched by finding its source. The siren’s song. 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
As I sing, hands start pounding upon the coffin. A wail of need erupts from the strangers throat as they attempt to pull apart the thick boards. I crescendo and hear a tool prying nails from the top. With tears from my eyes I finish the song as the top is removed…
Raine lost #3:
Freed from my coffin confinement, I see him. His eyes lose their mad glaze as I stop singing. His breath calming from its frenzy. He looks around, wondering how my wooden tomb got destroyed. He sees the tool in his hand, drops it. I’m weak, I’m scared. I open my mouth to speak and he slams his hand to cover my noise.
“Don’t. I’ll make you a deal: you stay quiet and I’ll let you out.”
I nod. He slowly moves his callused hand from my face as I regain my breath. He offers his arm to help me out of the ruined box and leads me to a crate to sit. Hands me a water skin and I drink quietly. Assessing.
“I came into the tavern in Haven not long ago. Saw a man, feet covered in sores, hobble into there where you sang and he walked out, whole. Healed. You’re coming with me to help my home.”
“Why…”
He draws a wicked dagger from seemingly no where and holds it to my throat.
“Last I heard your voice, you messed with my head and that happened.” He points to the destroyed coffin.
“I don’t like my head getting messed with. You’ll only speak with me this close.”
Swallowing, I feel his dagger cut into me as a bead of blood falls down my neck.
“You saw me freely heal another, why did you capture me instead of ask me for help?”
“No one helps my people. You’ll soon see why.”
Raine Lost #4:
Chaos. Fighting. Blood. Terror. Madness. In the dark of the night evil will find you… “What have I been doing?”
Drain. Magic. Darkness. Hunger. Fear. See my skin I’m a mass of blood… “The songs have a new cadence.”
Weapons. Weaping. Thirst. Chains. Change. At the end of the day you get nothing for nothing… “I was taken. Brought to heal those who are lost. Then attacks came, the man who brought me, he, he fought, held at bay. I took up a new weapon.”
Reaping. Reaps. Reaper. Reaped. Reap. The sun’ll come out… “I only see flashes. I still hold the new blade. Looking around I see Haven. I’m back. I’m free again. I’m… changed… and I don’t know if for good or for ill. Home is so close, the tavern. My friends. How long was I gone? What was his name? The man who took me. Who were they? They ones I helped. Who were the ones who attacked? Spots in the dark. Molly Mavis is running toward me. Others with her. I’m falling. She catches my head before it hits. Safety and love have returned.”
