As Countess Isebeau leaves town in the twilight, Drider ascends a nearby hill overlooking the road back to DeJardin lands. He begins a slow, melodious chant, in a language that feels familiar to all who hear it, yet compleatly foreign at the same time. If asked what he said, this is the translation he would give:
“To the mother, grant her peace in these trying times. Wisdom for the plans of the future. Strength to do what must be done. Kindness, to help when the action is over. And health, that the child is born without issue.
For the Child, I give the full blessing of a hero. May they have a pure heart, uncorrupted by the sins of their father. May they have wisdom to see the straight and narrow path before them. May they have strength to persevere through that path. May they be curious to learn about the world around them, and understanding with the answers they find. May they be accepting of all peoples, never judging before they learn. May they be just, and value the truth above wants and desires.
May this child know hardship, that they will learn to rely on others, and to rise above their woes. May they know pain, so that they learn the value of healing. May they know loss, to make them think before taking. May they know suffering, that they may learn to have mercy on those less fortunate. And may they know poverty, that they value the gifts they are given, and help those in need.
May this child grow, prosper, and learn, that they may become the leader their people need to raise them above their prejudice and malice. May they become a symbol of peace in chaos, of healing in hurt, of aide in need, and of hope when all else is lost. To this child I entrust this blessing, and the weight of responsibility it brings.”
Drider watches as the Countess and her attendants fade from view, hoping his blessing can undo just the smallest amount of evil in the DeJardin family.

Overhearing Drider’s words, Kazuro would speak. “I would never want someone to suffer the same fate as I. Yet, if such a child needs a guide, I can take them under my wing. I know all these things that you speak of, and it has molded me into wanting to be a hero. Are you certain you wish this path for the child?”
