Tick Tock…
Tick Tock…
Tick Tock…
I hear the reparative mechanical clicks of my families grand old clock. It’s subtle noises grow louder in my head as it rings through my ears.
There I lay in bed, eyes wide open glued to the wooden rafters of my families cottage. Our house is small, smack-dab on the outskirts of our village.
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
My eyes drift inward on the massive wooden clock belly. It’s arm swaying back and forth, hypnotizing in every way for someone with as little sleep as I.
My eyes glance upward now, tracing the intricacies of this mechanism, finally landing on the time. A few seconds prior to midnight.
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
I follow the second hand, watching it land right on midnight with that of the minute hand. The clock letting off a low ring to let whoever may be keeping it company know that it finally struck the high hour. Though every night, for the last 10 years this hour has not just brought upon the time. But also something else.
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
Slowly I rise up from my woolen base. Laying my head on the frosted glass. It’s cold soothing my cheek, caressing it with winters stinging kiss. My eyes wander to outside our home. The clock berating my right ear as the cold swallows up my left. Gently my ears listen in for more. Rattling chains, the clank of heavy metal. The groans of a tortured soul.
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
Winters rushing winds makes it hard to see, outside my home wanders a forgotten one. An unknown being, with an appearance from what can only be described at this distance in this snowing flurry- A soul collector. The Reaper if you would. I’ve done my best to get them to see, all of them to see. To understands what I’ve seen every single night for so long, to understand what it is I’m trying to tell them.
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
They all call me crazy, my brain filled with endless thoughts of manifested fantasies due to my lack of sleep.
“Nay” I tell them. For this being only passes by my home, straight from the hills and into the neighboring tree line. The beings garb is dark, their armor- what there is of it- vastly robust. For the tools this being wields are not normal, frightening in design.Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
Slowly I drift downward. It seems I’m drifting away finally into rest. My eyes catching a glimpse of the upper part of this forgotten ones face. Black tears stream down their cheeks. Are they sad? Do they need help? What am I to do?
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
Tick-Tock…
It seems my body is betraying me. I am unable to stay awake no longer. Goodnight winters kiss, goodnight mysterious soul, good night clock. May you help me see what only I see again this next night.
